Who is Jessica?

I’m a practicing intensive care nurse and educator, who holds a PhD in Medicine from the University of Newcastle.

In addition to 13+ years of bedside nursing, my areas of work include health professions workforce development, including policy, education, and science communication. I really love being a nurse - it brings richness and empathy to my life, and I consider it a privilege to skillfully care for others in their most vulnerable moments

So how did I get here? Some years ago between scrolling Instagram and raising babies I began to notice two things. One, there was a heck of a lot of information for parents and carers to consume online. Two, there were rarely nurses in the media?!

This set me on my journey of exploring science communication, research, and nursing. And, well, here we are! I work as an academic in health professions education where I am a course convener, researcher, and educator (I educate on things like science communication, electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation, digital health and more!). I firmly believe that education should be accessible and in 2022 I published my signature CRABS framework for credibility. This framework is designed to help sift through online content to determine what is credible (and what’s not). For some wild reason, it resonated… and I’ll be forever known as the “CRABS Lady”!

I’ve won some awards and grants (read more about that here) and I’ve been published in the media, which you can find samples of here.

What about outside of that? I love spending time with my family, gardening (you can see snippets of that over at Instagram), pretending that I’m a runner, and finding the nearest ocean. I live on Kombumerri Country, part of the Yugambeh language group - aka the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

I hope you’ll stick around! Jess x
